I have a wordpress multisite with three sites. I implemented my Google Tag Manager container with custom code, with each multisite having its own Google Tag Manager account, and each of those sending data to a separate Google Analytics 4 property. I’ve been using the console, GTM’s Tag Assistant, and DebugView in GA4. Everything is working from that end, and in GA4, I have traffic data for all three. But not for every event.

One site (which I’d been tracking with GA UA previously) seems completely fine. I turned on Enhanced Measurement in the data stream and I am tracking all of the optional events, including site search and form start/form submit. The additional events appear under the Admin console in Existing Events, I can choose to configure them as conversion events, and when I test them data shows up in the reports as it should.

But here’s where it gets weird. For the other two sites, even though I’ve turned on Enhanced Measurement for both and done consistent configuration, neither shows the additional events for form start, form submit and view search results (the additional “enhanced measurement” events). Data Streams shows that they are setup as needed. When I test using console, GTM OR GA4 Debug View, the right data is flowing. But none of these additional events appear in the Admin console for those properties under Existing Events, nor do they auto populate into the Conversion Events table, where I can choose to configure them (or not) as conversions.

I can create them as standalone custom conversion events, but they don’t appear as existing events. And in either case, neither of those two sites show data for the test I’ve been doing in the GA4 reports.

At this point, I’m thinking “WTH??” I’m stumped.

  • Without being able to take a look at the affected pages, we can’t really help you with this, unfortunately. Since you are using custom code and not showing it, it is especially difficult. WordPress doesn’t have any built-in features for GA4 capture. One guess would be that there is a JavaScript error in the affected pages that prevents the capture.

As it turns out, the issue fixed itself. By that I mean that events appeared in the Admin console under Existing Events the next day.

Now, I was aware that the events might not appear in the reports for sometime — that’s expected behavior with most analytics tools. But the fact that the events would not also show up under Existing Events in the Admin Console for several hours — that behavior is very unexpected.
