    Hi Folks,

I recently noticed my GA4 pageview metrics were duplicated. For instance, if I created an incognito browser window and visited a page on my site, I would immediately see 2 pageviews for that page (but only one user).

This issue is only for GA4, my UA numbers look 100% fine.

I thought maybe it was installed twice on my site, but I only see evidence of one tracking code snippet on my website. (e.g. here).

I tried removing my plugin (monster insights) and that made all tracking disappear (as expected). I then installed Google Site Kit. Once the pipes were flowing, I had the exact same problem: double pageviews for GA4, perfectly normal metrics for UA (I visited a new page incognito and did the check again).

    best,
    Munier

    Hi Munier,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your experience. From checking your site manually and from using the tagassistant.google.com service I can indeed see your GA4 property may indeed be firing twice.

While I check this further can you share the following information:

    1. Your Site Health information
    2. Did you connect your UA and GA4 properties at Google Analytics level, before or after connecting the Analytics module within Site Kit (Google Analytics > Admin > UA Property > GA4 Setup Assistant > Connected Properties)?

Let me know if you have any questions with the above. If we can determine any issue with your connected property we can temporary disconnect at Google Analytics level. Let me know if you do so and I can check your site once more, while I also perform some checks from my side.

    Thanks @jamesosborne,

    1. I submitted the form as requested.
    2. I set up UA a year or two ago (when I set up tracking w/ Monsterinsights). I set up GA4 a few months ago when that plugin suggested doing so. I only set up SiteKit this morning (not sure if this is the answer to your question … let me know!).

    Hi there @mun13r88,

Thanks for the update. As nothing stands out from your Site Health information can you please share a screenshot similar to the below, showing any possible “Connected property” from your UA account, under the “GA4 Setup Assistant” link? What we need to see is if there is an already connected property, which references the same GA4 property. I’ve made a quick video on how to access that section.

I suspect you may already have connected the same GA4 property, which could be contributing to the double tracking.

Let me know if you need assistance with the above. If you do find an already connected property can you temporarily remove this connection while we check your site once more?

    Hi @jamesosborne,

Here is the screenshot from that page (it looks a bit different from your version, but hopefully this is what you wanted to see …)

    In GA4:
    https://dismalwilderness.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screen-Shot-2022-04-21-at-7.04.13-AM-2.png

    In UA:
    https://dismalwilderness.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screen-Shot-2022-04-21-at-7.07.59-AM.jpg

… so maybe this is the issue? The property is connected in both the old and new interfaces … it’s very odd google would not warn against this or detect/correct for it. (if this is indeed what’s wrong).

Should I unlink one of these?

Many thanks for sharing. As you’ve already linked what I suspect is the same GA4 property can you disable the option for Site Kit to insert your GA4 snippet and inform me once complete (Site Kit > Settings > Analytics > Edit)? That way I can check your site and ensure there is only 1 property being tracked.

Thanks @jamesosborne it looks like that did the trick! From some in-cognito browsing i’m now seeing odd (non-even) numbers ??

So to summarize, without that box checked, Google was automatically sending the data to *BOTH* UA and GA-4 already (since the two IDs are associated with one another). But by checking that “include code snippet” piece, I was inadertently sending GA-4 the data twice.

It strikes me as a bit weird Google doesn’t explain that better / catch it when it’s happening.

    Hi @mun13r88,

Really happy to hear it! Thanks for the update and willingness to perform these checks.

I believe this may be a limitation of the Google Analytics API, with the plugin not being able to determine a “connected” GA4 account at Google Analytics level. I will check this with the team however, it’s certainly not ideal to be double tracking GA4 properties. Many thanks for bringing this to our attention.
