Future Posts Show Empty Category

When I post in the future, the post prematurely counts on the category to which it has been posted, even though it has not been published. This is a bigger problem if the category does not contain any previous entries as the category link is shown in the sidebar, which when clicked on, navigates to the Error – 404 not found.
Has anyone else had and fixed this issue?
