Functions.php documentation or use

Could you the purpose of functions.php template and how I would use it?

I created my own theme and have adapted most all the pages included in the default style. Do I need to copy the functions.php file into my new theme directory? Will I need to have this file at the present or in the future if I add some plugins or whatever?
