FTP Username and Password not working

    I can log in to Fugu (my FTP client), I can log into WordPress, and my site is working fine. but when I try to update wordpress my FTP details don’t get accepted. The error says Please verify the settings are correct. Nothing has been changed, though. My user/password should work!

    I think I’m using the wrong hostname or the wrong format for the hostname.

    Hostname: lawrencesql.db (my HOST database from my Config.php file, right? this shouldn’t be my website or anything?)
    FTP Username: from my config.php file
    FTP Password: from my config.php file

    Also, I checked my DNS and it all seems to be working and pointing to where it should be pointing. This worked before. I’m so frustrated with wordpress.

  • your config.php details refer to your mysql database, NOT your ftp.

    Hostname is often just your url (ie mysite.com), though it can vary depending on hosting provider. If you log into your hosting website, you should find a section on adding FTP users, where you can create a new username and password

    Thank you! I checked and I already set up a username and password. Those aren’t the problem. The problem is the hostname. How do I know what to put there? I tried my url (writeornot.com) and I get the error, so that isn’t it. I tried using the Connect to: info that I use to make Fugu (ftp client) connect and that didn’t work. Is there someplace I can go to find my hostname?

    Well if you can connect via ftp with your client, then there must be some other issue than the credentials. FTP login info is FTP login info, so what works for Fugu should work for the WordPress updater.

    Maybe your hosting blocks access attempts from certain IP addresses?

    It looks like you’re hosted by nearlyfreespeech.net? Might look at some of the info they have on ftp:

    Hi Dandy Plow. Don’t give up on me, but my Site and Profile both have FTP enabled. I waited the one to five minutes they suggested but I’m still not getting FTP to work! Any other suggestions?
