• I have had my blog set up for over a year. I somehow figured out how to set the ftp settings so that all I have to do is tell it to update a plugin and it does it.

I want to change the ftp server info… more specifically switch to sftp, but I cannot find the ftp settings. I have installed SSH SFTP Updater Support, but it is still using the old ftp.

I have looked and I have NO ftp settings in wp-config.php. I have looked and looked but cannot find the ftp info anywhere or find any article that tells me it could be anywhere else.

I have a wp-config.php, and it has settings in it, but there are no settings for ftp. It is not a large file, but just to be sure I was not overlooking it, I searched for “ftp”, my hostname and the IP.

So the ftp settings HAVE to be somewhere else. Below are all the plugins I have installed. the one for sftp was most recently installed but it is not using sftp.

Add Font Family Dropdown to Visual Editor
    Cool Video Gallery
    Gallery
    Hello Dolly
    New User Approve
    Simple Local Avatars
    SSH SFTP Updater Support
    Ready! Backup
    WP-Mail-SMTP
WP Complete Backup (which stopped working, thus the Ready! Backup)

FTP settings are not, by default, stored in the wp-config.php file as the vast majority of hosting packages are configured in such a way that WP has FTP access without them. If your hosts are not one of these, see this Codex section.

I remember setting up the FTP (because I had issues) but I don’t remember how/where.

Where would these definitions be found?

If I understand that link you sent, these would be definitions in wp-config.php. This is where EVERY article I have read says that the ftp settings are located. My wp-config.php does NOT have ftp settings.

    Then where are they?

I don’t mean to be a jerk, but I know where they are not.

Can anyone tell me where the ftp settings might be? or where they are by default?

By default, they are not stored anywhere by WordPress

Okay, I update wordpress and install pluggins without entering ftp information. Does wordpress not need ftp info to automatically download and install updates and plugins?

If not, where MIGHT the ftp settings be? I don’t know enough about wordpress to find it on my own. This is getting very frustrating as I want to turn off my ftp server.

It depends upon the server. On some servers, WordPress has this access by default. Where it does need access details, you either have to type them in each time when prompted or you have to add them to the wp-config.php file as the page at the link I posted above explains. Please try reading it.

I did read your link and as I said, there is nothing in my wp-config.php! How about you try to tell me something I DON’T know rather than what I do know!

Telling me that “On some servers, WordPress has this access by default.” was the first helpful think you have posted. Apparently mine is such a server. I have turned of ftp and can still install plugins.
