I’m having an issue porting my themes edits to my Dreamhost account; I’m using Dreamweaver (CS3) and the edits to my .CSS and .PHP files in my wp-content/themes/x folders aren’t taking, although they’re confirmed transfers. I use FileZilla to confirm the modifications by checking the “Last modified” column and they’re porting over fine, but the changes don’t take when I view my pages.

I can edit the themes fine in WordPress’s Edit Theme screen and they work instantly. Puzzling. Anyone else having similar problems?

Thanks in advance for your time.

    Cheers

  • Remember to press CTRL and F5 simultaneously when viewing an updated page/site. Or try emptying your browser cache. This should ensure that your web browser fetches a fresh copy of the page rather than serving up an out-dated copy from your own cache.

FWIW, I upload edits via FTP all of the time and have never had a problem.

Thanks for the quick response, esmi.

Still not working. I’m viewing the page in Safari and Firefox and cleared both caches and the FTP modifications aren’t taking. The “Last modified” column changes to show the moment I upload the FTP updates, but the pages still look the same even after I clear out the caches of both browsers.

I go back to the WP “Edit Theme” page, make the same changes and voila, the page updates! I’ve been working in WP since 1994, editing pages via FTP and I’ve never encountered this before.

I’m willing to bet it’s something simple, but at the moment it’s driving me mad.

Are you running any caching plugins? Is your hosting provider using a cache?

I have to work with a client’s provider that appears to run some sort of web caching. CSS changes can take 10 minutes to impact on the site. I’ve found one way around this is to delete the old version of the file just before uploading the new one – rather than relying on over-writing.

You were right, esmi; it was a host provider cache issue. The server my account was on went legacy and I was still editing old information rather than the data on the new server.

I checked my spam folder and naturally there’s a letter from my host provider notifying me of the server change.

    Thanks much for your input.
