I have a very frustrating issue with using featured images. I am able to upload an image and select it, but as soon as I click “update” for the post, it is gone.

If I return to the media library and select the image, the preview is broken. I have done the following:

    Delete all cache
    Remove all plugins
    Revert to a default theme
    Rebuilt the htaccess file
    Resaved permalinks
    Ensured address is consistent
    Deleted images and uploaded again
I have also tested with Featured Image From Url, a plugin. Even an external image disappears when the post is updated.

This is a clean site with two remaining plugins. I am at a loss to explain it and it is making crazy.

    I’m open to suggestions. Thanks.

  • Hey @cyberfarer ,

I can see that you have tried multiple things to solve the issue; however, I would suggest you check the following if they can help:

Check file permissions: Ensure that the uploads folder and its subfolders have the correct file permissions (typically 755 or 777).

Check for PHP errors: Go to your WordPress dashboard and enable WP_DEBUG mode by adding the code to your wp-config.php file.

Check for conflicts with other scripts: As you mentioned, you have a clean site; still, if you’re using any custom scripts or JavaScript libraries, try disabling them to see if they’re causing the issue.

Increase PHP Memory Limit: The issue can occur if the PHP memory limit is too low. So, consider increasing the PHP memory limit.

Hopefully, one of these solutions will help resolve the issue of using featured images in WordPress.

I’ve replaced everything and the problem persists.

I have resolved this. It involved dumping the database and starting with a clean one. To do this, I exported my widget. The plug in I used, Widget Importer & Exporter, didn’t recognize its own file, but allowed me to copy and paste into a text box and that saved me some work. Backup Migration offered to backup my theme but restored none of my customizations so that saved me no time. WordPress’s export and import feature worked as expected, thank goodness. I don’t know where in the database this issue resided but I hope I don’t see it again. Thanks for any interest.
