• Hello,

After tinkering with wp.com, I have decided to take the plunge and go with a hosted wp solution via a third party vendor. I used Fantastico to install, so thought, pronto, I will click a few buttons and get the same interface and results I am used to, but…..here is what I get:

    “0000-00-00 00:00:00 0000-00-00 00:00:00 open open draft 0 post https://trustwatch.wordpress.com/?p=13 Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 trustwatch https://trustwatch.wordpress.com/?p=13 13 0000-00-00 00:00:00 0000-00-00 00:00:00 open open draft 0 post https://trustwatch.wordpress.com/?p=14 Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 trustwatch https://trustwatch.wordpress.com/?p=14 14 0000-00-00 00:00:00 0000-00-00 00:00:00 open open draft 0 post “

And etc etc etc. No dashboard I am used to either. Did it not install properly? Did I not upload my site content correctly? What am I doing wrong?

My host does not support wp, hence the Q here.

  • I’m confused. You’re leaving wp.com, right? So is this caused by importing from wp.com I’m guessing? Because otherwise I’m not sure why you would see those URLs.

What exactly brought you to this point? Be a little more detailed than “click a few buttons.”

    Thanks for helping out.

I have a domain at xyz.wp.com that I want to move to “xyz.com”. I chose a host other than wp to host the application. I exported the site content from the main db to my HD, then uploaded via ftp to my new domain host. The result is the gibberish that I posted.

To set up wp with my domain host, I used fantastico. I am not sure if the install went as it was supposed to or not. When I browse through the file manager in my server’s cpanel, I do see the wp files and folders, so an installation, correct or not, has occurred.

I hope that this is clearer. Thanks for taking the time to help.

Okay, so if I got this straight…

You used the “export” tool on wp.com to export your site’s content. Then you installed WP on xyz.com using some tools from your host. Then, before ever looking to see whether this upload succeeded, you uploaded the wp.com export file to your site. And now you have an error, right?

You don’t import the wp.com stuff to your site that way. First, get wordpress running (without any posts in it). Then, use the “import” tool in the admin menu to import the wp.com stuff.

What’s the URL that you installed wordpress to?

What I am looking for is help on how to get WP working properly. So, can you (or anyone) help this wp newbie understand where my install has gone wrong?

    Link?

I don’t see the error you got. Instead, I see that you simply need to complete your installation, as instructed on your home page. Click on that “we got it” link to see exactly what you need to do.

interesting. i get two completely different errors, depending on the browser i use. with IE, I get the “we got it” message, with firefox, a full page of gibberish. I’ll find the wp-config file (it is there) and see what happens.

That’s odd. I use FF, but I saw the “we got it” message.
