Two weeks after installing Hyper Cache 2.9.1.4 on our site https://www.urban-eve.hu our users reported that the front page (set to show new posts) was “stuck” at an earlier state and was showing posts from weeks earlier as newest (site is updated with new posts 2-3 times a day).

In the Hyper Cache options I found this unticked:

    Home caching
DO NOT cache the home page so it is always fresh.

The description is quite confusing, but I ticked the option in and now the site loads way faster than before, and the number of files in cache have gone up from 3 to 500 in a couple of hours (note: I also pushed the Clear cache button before the home caching change). We have yet to hear if this fixed our users’ problem of viewing the site.

My problem is, I’m not sure what the “home caching” option does.
    – Does it cache the home page when it is ticked, or does it cache the home page when it is unticked?
    – Do I need to see to any other options to ensure that our homepage is always loaded fresh?
    – How can I make sure our users are seeing the home page properly?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

  • Hello AdamDobay do you have browser cache active? If you do you might want to uncheck the box and test the plugin again.

How many post do you have in your website?

    In regards to your question:

My problem is, I’m not sure what the “home caching” option does.

If you select the Home Caching option, your home page will not be cached. That way it will stay fresh always.

Also what version of WordPress are you using?

    Kind regards

    hi mbrsolution,

Thanks for clearing up what Home Caching does!

    To answer your questions:
    – “Allow browser caching” is off. (I wasn’t sure what that was, I left it alone. ??
    – The site has 2350 posts.
    – The WordPress install is 3.3.1 (planning to upgrade to 3.5.1 in a couple of weeks)

    Cheers,
    Adam

    Hi AdamDobay,

    You are welcome ??

    – “Allow browser caching” is off. (I wasn’t sure what that was, I left it alone. ?? = This option allows your browser to cache the content of the website further. If you select it, it will retain the cache in the browser further. I am not sure if it is a good idea in some cases. The reason for my comment is if you update your blog or website regularly then you probably want your visitors to see the latest updated content fast. This option means that the content will stay in the browser cache longer and unless they delete the browser cache they will not see the latest content until Hyper Cache deletes the outdated content. I constantly play with this option to see what is the best results in https://gtmetrix.com/. I also like this option because it speeds up my blog because the content stays in the browser longer and if the visitor has not deleted the cache it will view my content faster ?? By the way neither option is right or wrong. Everyone will use this particular option in accordance to their website and needs.

    – The site has 2350 posts. = At the moment when you said

and the number of files in cache have gone up from 3 to 500 in a couple of hours

that is because when someone clicks on one of your post Hyper Cache will create the cache version as far as I understand ?? this will then be added to the admin panel and thus the reason for your comment above.

    – The WordPress install is 3.3.1 (planning to upgrade to 3.5.1 in a couple of weeks) = I am glad that you are updating to the latest WordPress version. Too many run older versions and get hacked.

    Kind regards

    Hi mbrsolution,

Thanks for the detailed info on the browser caching option! As we update the site 2-3 times a day, we’ll just keep it turned off. I checked your website (very interesting btw, I will look into its recommendations), and I see you have a static webpage so it makes more sense to have it turned on.

The cache number is now over 1400 so yes probably with the visitors coming it is caching new stuff pretty fast.

We use Wordfence to monitor hacking attempts, unfortunately we can’t update WP very frequently because we use our own translation and that has to be updated every time we update, bit of a hassle. ??

If you say the options discussed & implemented solve the problem I started the thread for, I can mark the thread resolved.

    Thank you. ??

Thanks for the explanation. I was confused about the Home caching option as well, this thread answered my confusion. Hence my sites was lately being indexed due to this option.

My suggestion is, can you change the description a bit so people will have a better understanding.

    i.e.

Select this option to disable home caching / Unselect to cache the homepage.

Thanks for the plugin and support.

    Best Regards,
    Ryan
