Front page layout help

Hello,

I recently started using the columnist theme for a project i’m doing and really love it! I’m really happy with how it navigates but would love to have recent posts on the front page, as opposed to the list of categories it has at the moment.

I’m a complete novice with php so am a bit lost to say the least!
Any help would be much appreciated.
