Autoptimize plugin broke Front Page Hero Slideshow

Update: I found the cause – Autoptimize – now disabled. Do you know how I can get Autoptimize and Highlight’s slideshow to work together?

When I click “View Source”, I see it includes a script
id='mesmerize-theme-js-extra'>var mesmerize_backstretch
which includes the correct urls of the slideshow images, so why don’t they display?
(any browser, any device)

Plugins and theme are all up-to-date.

Found: When I disabled Autoptimize, the slideshow appeared again.
When I re-enabled Autoptimize, the slideshow disappeared again.
I have left Autoptimize disabled.
