front page again htaccess or database

  • my specific problem is that when I select a static page from Settings-Reading for the front page then the home page of the site can not be found by the browser. I am using %postname% in permalinks and all other pages are available for navigation. I have tried several pages but none provide a working front page. The blog front page works fine.
    I am using wordpress 2.7.

    Is this done in .htaccess or the database? If so, where should I look to make the correction?
