Front end category query search for users

I’ve been digging through plugins for hours now and can’t find what I’m looking for. Hopefully it’s not unfamiliar to everyone.

I’m developing a site for a specific genre of books and the authors that write them. Over time, there will be hundreds and eventually thousands of entries, and what I need is to allow users to query for books based on categories established so that only the posts (all book entries are posts, submitted by authors, sorted into all relevant categories) which match all the query selections show up.

If I’m not being clear, imagine that you are on a page showing all the books. You check a box for just romance books, and the list is narrowed down to just those categorized as romance. Check the ‘new adult’ box and now it shows only books that are categorized both romance & new adult. Check another box for, say, HEA or happily ever after and you get an even narrower list, and so on.

Maybe I’m using the wrong search terms to find this, I see a lot of back-end stuff about how I can sort posts into pages this way but what I need is for it to be user driven. Any suggestions?
