You might want to rethink/rephrase a couple of these statements. ??

Yep, this definitely works – Check the stats tab of the plugin and you will be able to see a history of when this plugin was first added to WordPress.

Not if the copycat is artificially boosting total number of downloads and bypasses you (no names, but yeah we know of a couple plugins doing this ?? – Check the number of downloads on the sidebar. The original plugin always gets more downloads than the copycats.

Same as above (no names:) ) – Check the number of ratings. The original plugin should have more votes.

Yep, this definitely works – Check the developer’s site.

Those plugins are pretty easy to spot – total downloads doubled overnight ha ha ha and 5 times the normal number of votes/star ratings ha ha ha. Too funny.

I totally understand what you are saying.

The issue was that at some stage there were 6 to 7 plugins with exact duplicates of this one (with a slight name change) and lots of users were getting confused and filling out our contact form asking the “which is the original one” question every day.

All these users getting confused and us having to spend time every day replying to the same question wasn’t desirable. So yeah it is definitely not a foolproof method but it helped cut down that user confusion a lot in our case.

Yep, got the same thing going on with BPS as far as code copying goes, but not the plugin name copying issue. I don’t mind sharing code at all, but if you are going to grab code from another plugin then at least learn how it works so you can support it 100%. ?? And it would be nice if at least some kind of attempt was made to modify the original code at least a little bit. ha ha ha I don’t know why, but it makes me feel like the person is lazy and just doesn’t care, which is a button of mine. ??

Comes from past SEO experiences. So many SEO hacks out there that it ruined the SEO business for everyone. ??
