I tried to update the new version of Yoast SEO FREE by clicking on the update link.
“There is a new version of Yoast SEO available. View version 9.2.1 details or update now.”

The following message was displayed. I have not changed file permissions anywhere

Version 9.1 | By Team Yoast | View details
Update Failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.

I have NOT changed any file permissions for Yoast for any other updates and have not changed permissions period on my site.

    1) I then tried to uninstall the plugin. I deactivated it and clicked delete and the following error popped up.

“Could not fully remove the plugin wordpress-seo/wp-seo.php.”

    2) next I went to the YOAST SEO KB for assistance. Since I’d already tried the usual WP uninstall method and received the above error, I followed the manual uninstall directions. I went into CPanel and removed the directory and its files

3)Directory removed successfully go back into WordPRess backend, and the Plugin is still there.

    4) Went back into Cpanel and the wordpress-seo directory and files have reappeared, EVEN THOUGH I deleted them and said to bypass trash AND I checked Trash to ensure they had actually been deleted.

    5) the only thing I’ve done to the site in the past three weeks was to upload Divi Theme last night.

I’d really like to get this plugin uninstalled from my site. I don’t want to upgrade, and because I can’t update or uninstall the current FREE version, I’m pretty frustrated.

When you delete a folder in cPanel and it remains, this is indicative of a permissions issue. Can you please check the permissions on the file in question (wordpress-seo/wp-seo.php) ? Typically the permissions of folders will be 755 and files will be 644, but this may vary depending on your hosting provider. If the file (or file within a folder) has incorrect permissions, it will appear to delete in cPanel but then reappear as it does not have the correct permissions to be removed. If you are uncertain how to correct the permissions on the file/folders we would recommend contacting your hosting provider.

Thank you for the reply. The file permissions are correct. I’ve drilled down into subdirectories just to see if there’s an issue. All files are 0644 and folders are 0755

    Suggestions on how to proceed?

While the permission looks correct, we recommend you please reach out the web hosting provider to find out the exact cause of this issue as this is an issue specific to the web hosting permission.

    CLosed. No further questions.
