• Last month I started a blog that I hope will better the world even if only in a small way. I did most of the designing on my own with different “make your own website” guidelines and a ton of Google searches. Other than a few Myspace profile design coding, I’ve had no experience with designing online so it’s not exactly like what I pictured, but pretty close.

I was hoping I could get some input. Anyone willing to check it out and tell me what they think/what I could improve/what isn’t working, etc. would be most helpful!

    Thanks so much,
    Eva

  • Since you rated my blog, I thought it was only fair that I critique yours!

I’m really liking the feel of your blog. The simplicity really helps, and I like the added flowers as bullets for menu items. Overall, I like the no BS approach, but I feel like maybe it could use some color, or some sense of… borders? I guess you would say, and not as much white. Something to maybe consider, and just a personal preference.

I’m not an expert on blog design, but I thought I would give you my two cents since you critiqued my blog.

I forgot to comment on the content of your blog which I enjoy. I am interested in film so reading your articles on films was nice. I especially liked the review of Eat, Pray, Love where you reviewed the book, movie, and soundtrack. Very nice!

Thank you so much nglover64! I really appreciate you taking the time to check out my site. I love color so I’m definitely going to work on what you said. Also, I’m so glad you actually read my content and gave me your feedback on that as well. I’m happy you liked what you saw! Thanks again!

You header seems dead. It could use some color, aren’t clover’s green?
The flowers for bullets don’t relate to the blog and seem very dated.
    Add some borders.

Thanks for looking at my blog, marjiec. The clover is green… it’s been pressed so it’s lost most of it’s color. I’ve lightened it up as much as possible without making it look too fake. I’m a big fan of minimalism and simplicity so that’s why I haven’t put borders. Too each his or her own, I suppose. Thanks again for checking it out.

    Hi Eva,

Great site! I’m definitely a graphic design newb myself, so I’m not the one to ask about layout. (I like it personally, though.)

One thing I really like (and am qualified to talk about) is your use of a serif font for your body text. Your writing and excerpts are quite long — a good thing — and are definitely benefited by very readable typography. Too often, blogs with longer text are set in Arial or another sans serif face, and they’re harder to read. You, however, understand that while sans serif is more legible, serif is more readable. Big difference.

Keep up the great work chick!

Thank you, abillman! I was never sure about the font so I’m glad you said something and in such detail so I know exactly where you’re coming from.

No worries about being an expert or not; just an initial reaction to my site is worth saying/hearing.

I really appreciate your kind words!
