Forum without WordPress registration?

I have a website I’m maintaining that has a membership level access to it, and they don’t want to allow “anyone to register”, as we’ve had real problems with spam. Is there a way to have users register/log in without using WordPress’ login system? Maybe login with Facebook, Twitter or Disqus, but for more than just commenting? We’d like to allow users to post their own questions to the forum.
