Forum plugin requirements?

Hi. I’ve been looking around but I haven’t found this answered yet. I’m very new to this all. I’m working on a website just for my neighborhood (maybe a few hundred residences) where people can communicate about local stuff, post announcements, items wanted, etc. and I’d like to use a forum plug-in. Does anyone know what kind of hosting would support this as far as bandwidth and the like. Like I said, I’m new to this but willing to learn. I don’t want to max out in a week if people actually start using the site. I hope I was descriptive enough. Thanks for any help.
