    Try switching to the default theme and deactivating all other plugins.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Your suggestion led me to an answer.
    The default theme worked fine.
    I found in the theme (Yootheme Joy) that I am using … I needed to have the form also in the main body of the page in order for it to work in a widget.
    Otherwise it did not appear.
    Odd.
    But – with a judicious {display:none} in the page – it works.
