Force Permalink Change for Categories

  • Is it possible to use htaccess or some other method to force a category permalink for a specific category? For example, if I had a category called fruit, I would want it to be:

    Fruit.mysite.com

    instead of

    mysite.com/category/fruit

    Making it a subdomain is something that I would like. Would this be possible to manually add rules to make this work? Would this cause errors with WP over time?
