  • The short answer: No.

    The long answer: Maybe. But it’s a very complicated thing, and does break some of the web surfing conventions of letting the user decide what they want to do with their own browser. You can do it by setting server directives to force downloads for that file type, but it’s not exactly the easiest thing to do and can get very techy very quickly. Even after all that it’s not guaranteed to work because users can set their browsers up to allow or ignore those sort of settings as well to decide how they want to handle these things.

    The same sort of argument rages about opening links in new windows/tabs as well. Once side says “But that’s how I want my website to behahve” and the other side says “But users should have control over what they do in their own browser”.
