• A large number of users to my website can access it with no problems. However, there is also a large group of people who keep getting messages along the lines of:

    <i>Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access /2015/05/please-tell-hart-council-how-much-you-value-our-countryside/ on this server.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.</i>

First I tried turning off the firewall in “Options” and this seemed to fix the error for a short while, but then it came back. I wonder if this is Wordfence “blacklisting” some IP addresses, but for instance, I as admin never have this problem, but sometimes another user in my house (using the same broadband connection) can get the error, so it doens’t seem to be an IP address issue.

I’ve now deactivated the plug-in entirely and the problem seems to have gone away. But obviously I don’t want to run with no security. How can this be fixed?

  • Are you running any other security plugins, membership plugins, that sort of thing? We use very specific blocked messages that are branded with the wordfence logo. That seems to be something more apache generated (from what I can see). Can you screenshot the error page and attach it?

I’m not running any other security plugins or membership plugins.

I’m sorry I don’t have a screen shot, as I myself have not received the error message.

Error seems ot occur most with people clicking on links from Facebook posts generated by the SNAP plugin.

I’ll turn the WF plug-in back on and next time it happens, I’ll see if I can get a screenshot.

    Active plug-ins:

    Add Meta Tags
    Black Studio TinyMCE Widget
    Favicon by RealFaviconGenerator
    Google Analyticator
    Google XML Sitemaps
    MaxButtons
    Meta Slider
    NextScripts: Social Networks Auto-Poster
    Page Builder by SiteOrigin
    PuSHPress
    Share Buttons by AddToAny
    Simple Download Monitor
    Social Media Widget
    TablePress
    WP User Avatar

Sorry, should have said, now reactivated WF, on setting Level 2, with no IP address blocks or network blocks set.

    Done some more digging.

I now have a screenshot of the error, which I have uploaded to the site and can be viewed here: https://wehearthart.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Forbidden-error.jpg

I’ve also been on to GoDaddy support and it seems that another security produce I once had installed for a short while and didn’t like much and then uninstalled it, might have corrupted the .htaccess file.

Too early to see if that has fixed it.
