    After updating my website from Sydney version 1.78 to 1.79, the layout of the widget areas in my footer changed from 3 horizontal widget areas in a row to 3 vertical widget areas one below the other in column 1. Hence I have reverted my website back to version 1.78 until this issue is resolved.

    Now I am really confused. I have exactly the same installation using version 1.79 at warminsterweb.co.uk and staging.warminsterweb.co.uk. The staging one looks fine; the live one looks wrong!

    Problem sorted. I was using a child theme for the footer area, and I see that you have changed it quite a bit.

    To be honest, I have not solved it. I have got rid of the child theme on the live site. That way I could upgrade to 1.79 without any issues. However, the footer is not how I like it. I tried creating a clean child theme, but as soon as I activated it, the footer widgets displayed in a single column. No idea why.

    I have got somewhat disillusioned with Sydney since this is the second upgrade that has broken my site. Therefore, I am in the process of migrating to OceanWP on my staging site, since I find that more robust.

    You are right! Just cleared the cache and restarted the browser. Now my child theme is displaying the widgets correctly. Thanks. On reflection, I think the last issue I had with a theme update was also a browser cache issue.

    I am not sure. If that feature is added to the theme, any other cached websites will be flushed and it may bring negative effects like saved preferences and password won’t be retained. And your visitors may got a hiccup as cache flushing is running in the background.

    Adding further, you may need to add an additional note to your website and ask visitors to flush their web browser’s cache with this plugin. This will help to assure them that there is nothing wrong with your site’s footer.
