Footer full page width Gateway theme

I am using the Gateway theme and I would like the page footer to extend the full width of the page — rather than 3 columns — similar to the home page layout. I looked at the footer template but before I attempt to modify it I am wondering if anyone has done so or if you think it is best not to do for scaling etc?
