WordPress 6.3 broke font-managment with twentytwentythree.
I can add the Google-fonts I need, but only the first preview is correct. Later unter manage fonts, the preview is broken and I can’t select the added font within the editor.
I switched back to a 6.1.3 installation to export my theme, which is usable in 6.3. However – preview under manage fonts is also broken in 6.1.3 with the newly added fonts. The themes basic fonts are previewed correctly. I also had some problem with my re-export, which would only give me a file called “zip” with no-name. Giving it a name.zip helped here.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Font management seems… kinda broken, but not entirely. I added a font to my theme, and it showed up in the font manager, but didn’t actually add to the theme in any way I could use. I went back a few hours later, and added my font again, and now it works fine! (It’s still displaying a generic font in the Font Manager instead of the actual font, though).

Hopefully another version of this plugin will come out that works better with 6.3. It’s only listed as being compatible with up to 6.2.2.

Hi @ma_wordpressorg, @eharris, I’m not able to reproduce the issue you are describing. The font management seems to be working OK with 6.3.

To debug this, please try deactivating all other plugins apart from Create Block Theme and try again.

If the problem persists, please, reset your global styles to defaults like in this screencast: https://youtu.be/HQCToOpJIqY
After that try adding the fonts again.

Same problem for me, not only for “Create Block Theme”, also the alternative “Host local fonts” is not working any more since last upgrade to WordPress 6.3. (as far a I know font management will be implemented in 6.4?).

Installing a local font is only possible in the parent, installed I can see him also in “manage theme fonts” when child-theme is active. But nevertheless I don’t bring a local font to the editor. theme.json look’s OK and I see the files under /themes/twentytwentythree/assets/fonts/…

I have noticed the same problem since WP 6.3, using the Create Block Theme Manage Fonts in a previously created child theme I can select the Google Font, have it added to the child theme, the font files show up in the /assets/fonts/ directory and in theme.jason, BUT those fonts do not show up in the global styles typography drop down menus, nor in individual block typography settings menus. In other words the fonts seem to be there, but are not selectable or usable on the site.

Same with me: I can add the fonts, but they do not appear in any typography menu. As @hartsook says: they seem to be here, but are not selectable or usable on the site. Interestingly, I am able to use the fonts that I added a few weeks ago perfectly fine. Deactivating the plugins does not help. Neither does resetting the global font styles and adding the fonts again.

The plugin is showing not tested for 6.3 but gave it a try. Creating child theme then attempting to add a local font brings in the new font but in the process removes all the ones that came with the theme. Tried with TT3 and TT2. Tried manually copying in the font folders. Turned off the few plugins that came with a softaculous install. Still no fonts. This was my first foray into the new “block” world and it has been bruising. Ten minutes of work turned into a whole day and noting useable resulted. There are hints of greatness here though. Wondering out loud if it wouldn’t be better to just clone a 5 year old site and edit it to create the new.

    Hi everyone,

I see we’re having really similar issues here indeed.

The team is currently working on some work related to the WordPress core release, but they will try to investigate further as soon as possible.

Hi folks! With the new Font library feature, this issue will be addressed by a fix in the Gutenberg plugin, ultimately making it into core.

    Related issues:

Problem solved. WP RC2, Gutenberg 16.9.0 (probably irrelevant to this issue), CBT 1.13.3.

Adding both Google Fonts and Local Fonts work as expected. Font files get added to the theme root/assets/fonts/ directory, and the theme.jason gets updated, AND the added fonts show up in the styles UI (albeit at the bottom of the list instead of alphabetical order) in the typography>font family menus, both in global styles and in typographic blocks like paragraph, heading, etc.

If you add the fonts to the parent theme and then create a child theme, the added fonts are not available. I created the child theme, then added the fonts in the child theme and they work as expected.

Glad to have this functionality working again. It makes life a whole lot easier.

HAD THIS SAME ISSUE! And found a workaround

Site Editor > Styles > Edit Styles > Typography > click the little Aa in upper right corner to “manage fonts”.

NOW the fonts will show in the dropdowns. It seems the other Manage Theme Fonts in the WP Admin left-hand menu is not adding them here when they’re active.
