I am having issues with the FVM plugin rendering the Font Awesome icons as squares, I’ve done everything I can to figure out why but it seems the only way for me to show them again means that I have to deactivate FVM… please could you advise?

    Thanks

Have you tried all the options in the setting spage?
And have you read through our faqs?

    Hi Paul,

Yes, I have tried all the settings on the page, the only solution that works is removing the plugin and yes I have read your FAQs, there is nothing in there to do with FontAwesome not working…

    This is not resolved

I can understand but having to now re-explain this on another platform when I’ve already explained it to you on here and the problem is not resolved is it?

I’ve contacted you via the other platform.

Not really, there is only one person reading this and of course I cannot use to forum to discuss private information about your site.

I can assure you that there is no problem with fontawesome itself, and many sites use it together with FVM without any problems.

However, font-awesome can be included by the theme or by multiple plugins.
If some plugin, or theme edit is not following the correct method of enqueueing the icons – https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-properly-add-javascripts-and-styles-in-wordpress/ – FVM won’t be able to capture it and thus it can happen.

It can happen not only with fontawesome, but with any other css or js file too, hence there is an ignore list and many other settings to work with.

I cannot simply look at your site and FVM, and decide to fix things that are not only working for your specific site.

If a specific thing such as font-awesome is not working on your site when you use FVM, that is probably due to a conflict or an error somewhere.
It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an error with FVM, but rather that FVM cannot understand what your site is feeding it.

I’ll discuss the details via email, and update this message later with a solution for future reference of others.

I understand, and I have replied to your email directly too. I do understand that you can’t look at my site directly or receive personal information over this forum. I’m not saying that the problem is with the FVM plugin, I agree that there may be conflicts, but surely, you don’t know where those conflicts are until someone points them out?

Anyway, lets just leave that there, I’ve replied via email.

    I’ve replied too.

No, it’s not as easy to look at the website and see where the problem is.

The simple act of merging together, by copy paste, the css code and js code, can cause the error you see.

I can obviously see if the icons are missing, but that doesn’t tell me anything more about it, and neither allows me to see the reason or provide you with a solution. If it was that simple, anyone could be a programmer ??

I see and understand, I’ll await your reply via email…

For other users future reference, the website in question, uses plugins that enqueue multiple versions of font awesome, specifically version 4.5, 5.1, 4.7 and 5.5 (by this order).

Disabling FVM didn’t start showing the icons, so the issue lies somewhere else.

In this case, version 5 is overwriting version 4, however version 5 is not backwards compatible with version 4, meaning that most icons that make use of version 4, will not load.

Solution is unrelated to FVM, and basically can be fixed by removing the plugins that enqueue font awesome version 5 and replace them with some other plugin, which uses font awesome version 4. Doing that will show the icons.

As for FVM, because this happens regardless of FVM being enabled or not, it’s not something I can fix on FVM side.

I’ll be closing this as solved, so once you fix the site icons without FVM, and if you still have trouble with FVM, let me know and I’ll reopen it and reach out by email again.
