Can someone please set me straight so I know what to do with my wordpress.com blog?

I had a WP.com blog, then I decided to make a more professional site on WP.org. I used the Jetpack plugin to convert all my old followers over to my new site.

I then decided to go back to WP.com and follow my own blog to see what would happen. Even though I followed my old blog AFTER I converted it, I still get my new posts from my new site in my Reader! Fantastic!

If I delete my WP.com blog completely, will I lose those followers?

Would it be wise to stay on WP.com in order to stay in the community and get more followers to my updated site?

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

If you’ve transferred your followers from your old WordPress.com blog to your new Jetpack site, and if you don’t use that old WordPress.com blog anymore, you could delete the WordPress.com blog. The followers are associated to your Jetpack site, so you won’t lose any data.

However, I would suggest to keep your WordPress.com blog and redirect it to your new site for a few reasons:

    • Some of your readers might not know your new site address. It might consequently be better to set up a redirection so they get to know that you have a new site.
    • Search Engines like Google do not like duplicate content. If the same posts are available on 2 sites at the same time (like on your WordPress.com blog and on your new www.remarpro.com site), you will get penalized by Google.
    • If you set up a redirection, Google will start indexing your new www.remarpro.com site and will understand that all old WordPress.com posts now appear on that new site.

To set up a redirection, you can follow the steps here:

After a while, once your readers and Google have understood where your new site lives, it’s safe to either delete the old site, or mark it as private as explained here.

Unless you were to keep posting on that old site, you won’t get new followers there, as WordPress.com readers won’t have any incentive to visit that old site, and won’t see anything about it in their WordPress.com Topic Pages.

    I hope this helps.
