• Hi,

P2 looks like a good candidate for microblogging within our company, but it lacks, as far as I understand one important feature: ability to follow users. I don’t know to see what everybody writes (let’s say a couple hundred users), I only want to see posts from a restricted group of followers, such as team members and a few others. Is this scenario possible, and if so how?

    Thank you,
    Marius

  • Don’t think that functionality exists here really. Maybe in buddypress or something. Could be wrong I guess but I’ve searched high and low for similar stuff. I bet status.net or yammer would be a better option.

MariusBancila, you can follow an individual user’s updates by using the RSS feed from their author page. See an example on the P2 Demo site, and note how at the top of the page is an RSS feed for that user’s updates.

Another idea is to use tags for each team or group and follow the tag RSS feed.

At Automattic we use a different technique: each team has its own P2 instance so you only subscribe to the P2 sites you wish to follow.

This would require a bit of coding.

I would look if other services like present.ly, yammer, status.net or WP based buddypress are more elegant solutions.

I modified and run a customized p2 as a platform for communicating with my clients. Clients only get to see their own comments and my replies to them, or messages I send to the entire group. It’s possible to build in functionality for groups but you’d need to get quite a bit of dev work done on it.

The point is that I don’t want to have one P2 instance for each team, because teams should be able to follow on each other, as they actually work together (at least partially). As far as I see, BuddyPress is a better candidate.
