Flyout menu quick edit Status Visibility etc all broken

After upgrading to 3.3 on one of my sites, all the inline stuff in the admin pages does not seem to work. Hovering over the links in the Navigation bar at the left does nt produce a flyout menu. Quick edit under a post does nothing. When editing a post, clicking on Status or Visibility does nothing.

I tried disabling all plugins and changing themes to twenty-eleven; made no difference.

I redid the automatic upgrade.

What else can I try, please?
