• I’ve been trying to display a thumbnail gallery, in my sidebar, of images from a set posted by the Library of Congress (LOC). The images are all marked as public. But no matter which Flickr plug-in I try (I’ve tried a number of them, including Slickr Flickr, FlickrPress, and several others), I can only get images from my own Flickr pages to show up, never images from another Flickr member’s set. I’ve tried every combination I can think of: with/without an API, with my FLickr ID, with the LOC Flickr ID, using the LOC set Flickr-supplied RSS feed, etc. No matter what I try, I get “Flickr is currently unavailable” or “Invalid RSS feed” or other such messages. No images.

So far, the only way I have been able to display LOC images is to mark some as favorites, and then display images from my own Favorites set. But this isn’t really a workable solution — the LOC set contains hundreds of images, and I have to delete all my other favorites to show just this set.

Is it simply not possible to display images from someone else’s photo set using a Flickr plug-in? Or am I not doing something right? Or is there a trick to this?

  • Please check out the photos at https://www.slickrflickr.com/2001/library-of-congress-baseball-photos/ for an example of Library of Congress Baseball photos

Note that I grabbed only 14 photos.

If I try and get more than 20 photos through the Flickr API then no photos are returned (at least at the time of writing) due to an ongoing hardware/software problem at Flickr described here at https://www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/72157625560721827/

Many thanks. I used the model on your demo web page, with a few adjustments, and it worked! Here’s what I wrote:

    slickr-flickr id=”8623220@N02″ type=”gallery” search=”sets” set=”72157619452486566″ items=”10″

See it in the sidebar here: https://www.bestrppc.com

No idea what I was doing yesterday that didn’t work — I thought I did exactly the same as today. Oh well. The number of images isn’t an issue — I only want 8 or 10, otherwise the sidebar is too distracting.

Perhaps you could help me on a refinement? I searched your list of Slickr Flickr parameters and couldn’t find a way to make the thumbnails proportional. FlickrPress (which I still can only get to show images from my own photostream or favorites) has an option for proportional thumbnails. These work great for the LOC newspaper pages, which show full-page, rather than cropped. Is there a way to get Slickr Flickr to do this? If so, your plug-in would be *perfect*. Thanks so much.

    Hi,

By default Slickr Flickr uses the ‘square’ thumbnail however you can also use proportional thumbnails too.

    For 100 by 75px thumbnails use thumbnail_size=”thumbnail”
    For 240 by 180px thumbnails use thumbnail_size=”small”

There is also in a thumbnail_scale parameter, a percentage scaling factor, so:

    For 180 by 135px thumbnails use thumbnail_size=”small” thumbnail_scale=75″

Here is an example using larger portrait thumbnails

The second gallery shows an example of using proportional landscape thumbnails
