Hi everyone, I would greatly appreciate some help!

My site, thewaterfrontbrewery.com is having some trouble on mobile. I thought the problem was just on my own phone (old Moto X), since a lot of online device demo sites (like https://mobiletest.me/) showed that the site looked fine on mobile devices. Also, in my laptop’s browser, the site behaved correctly when squished to the minimum width. But then I tried https://www.mobilephoneemulator.com/, and I was able to replicate the problem on my phone. The home page looks really messed up. ??

The strange thing is – an exact copy of the home page with the exact same template, https://www.thewaterfrontbrewery.com/home/ looks just fine. The current home page did too, until I set it as the home page.

Another strange thing, which may or may not be related, is that from the messed up home page’s menu, clicking About goes to /about, when the menu has since been updated to go to /about-us.

I’m really at a loss, and of course it’s not great to have a messed up looking home page for mobile visitors. Would someone please help me? Thank you!!!

Since that is a commercial theme, we ask that you please go to their official support channel, so you can get support from the people who know it best.

    https://themeforest.net/item/flatsome-responsive-woocommerce-theme/5484319/support

Forum volunteers are also not given access to commercial products, so they would not know why it is not working properly. Other community members who may have faced your issue might be able to help you but your best bet is your product’s developer. Keep in mind we encourage you to use the official support venues, as it allows the developers to be aware of issues with their code and gives back to the community in a more robust way.

Update, apparently the home page looks messed up on laptops too – but it looked fine when I was logged into WordPress!

After more digging, I found that the homepage isn’t properly loading the .css stylesheet. Why might that be? I think it used to, several site revisions ago, so maybe I messed something up.

Did you change the WordPress or Site addresses at Settings -> General?

Hi James – thank you for replying. Yes, I have changed WordPress + Site addresses at Settings -> General before, as a part of when this new site was launched to replace the temporary one.

Ok, I see the problem too at https://www.thewaterfrontbrewery.com

I’m not actually seeing any trace of the theme’s stylesheet in the source of that page.

I see you’re using something to minify other CSS. Is there any improvement if you disable that?

Interesting! I will try. I was using W3 Total Cache, but that was disabled temporarily. It might have been something I put in the htaccess file to help site speed. Perhaps I am trying techniques too advanced for my actual skill level. :B

Hm, if that makes no difference, try enabling W3TC. Perhaps the page is still loading from cache, but the cache hasn’t refreshed with W3TC disabled.

    (@karahuna)

That worked!!!!! I reenabled W3 Total Cache and disabled all the minifying! That is so interesting. I wish I could better understand the why… but for now, thank goodness the site is working properly! Thank you so much for your help, Jeff!!!

Minify is a tricky beast. Basically, it saves on load time just a tiny bit by mangling and compressing the code. Sometimes that’s a good thing … but sometimes “mangling and compressing the code” comes out just as it sounds.

I tend to avoid unless a client really really really wants it and understands that it could be disastrous.

Haha! Well, a large percentage of our customers are on mobile (60-70%), so I do want to make sure the site loads fast. The page speed scores are mediocre now, so there is probably will be more fiddling. I wonder would would happen if I deleted and reinstalled W3 Total Cache…. But for now, I’m very happy the site looks good, and I don’t really want to mess with it for a while!

    Thanks again. So appreciated!

Your speed scores aren’t bad at all.

3.5 seconds on the first view, and 0.9 seconds on the second view: https://www.webpagetest.org/result/160623_0G_1B3S/

    and 1.6 seconds here: https://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.thewaterfrontbrewery.com/yObvFQOw

If you’re using Google’s PageSpeed tool to test, don’t. Their tool is broken in some odd ways, even suggesting that you switch on things that its own mod_pagespeed is already doing.

Both tests above have great standing in the community and offer some useful advice, but overall your speed is great already.

Thanks! Now I feel better, and good to know about PageSpeed!
