• Is there an advantage/disadvantage to having a flat media folder instead of the standard uploads/year/month/file structure?

I recently took over a site that has media in a flat folder in the site root. We’re having problems but I’m just curious about thoughts on the above question.

  • I don’t think so. I just it makes things a lot easier. I would believe there are no disadvantages.

    Hi, @juusui
It depends on the site. For example, if my site doesn’t have new monthly media content, the folders are useless and I would want to have those few media files in a single place.

On the other hand if one has a lot of monthly new content, the montly folder structure is suggested, making things easier to find, maybe easier to backup, easier to keept track of.

So it’s entirely up to the developer.

    Hope this helps.
    Kind regards.

Thanks for the responses. Does having 75,000 files in the media folder change anyone’s mind?

If that’s the case, I would choose year/month structure, because there comes a point where you might need to search a certain file manually in the directory, and also looks much better, but I can’t think of a performance problem if you have them in the same folder. I might be wrong, though, and having them in separate folders actually be better for performance too.
