Setting a Primary Category in a WooCommerce Product does not reflect any changes in the permalink when using pretty permalinks settings that have the product category included.

It does not work when I upload products from a csv and import the “Meta: _yoast_wpseo_primary_product_cat” column as meta data, and it doesn’t work if I edit a product manually and set the primary category. I’ve also reset permalinks and cleared cache to see if that would help, but it didn’t.

I’ve seen multiple support threads here as well as bug reports in github regarding this issue, easily found by googling “yoast woocommerce primary category not working”, and the only thing that has fixed this issue is by using a php snippet from 2016 found here https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/4528#issuecomment-232263154 and I feel like this should have been resolved officially by Yoast by now. I don’t want to keep using a piece of php in my functions.php that I found randomly posted on the web which is now 3 years old .

    What’s the deal?

    Hi @jsnowbusiness,

The feature to have the permalink of WooCommerce products follow the primary category is part of Yoast WooCommerce SEO, which is a premium add-on.

We hope to have cleared things up for you.

It used to work fine and only recently started acting funny after updating, so basically free functionality was removed to make it premium? Weak.

If setting a Primary category in woocommerce products only works with a premium add-on… you should remove the option to even set a primary category in woocommerce products with the free version of Yoast (without the WooCommerce SEO add-on)…… because I’ve wasted countless hours troubleshooting this “problem” just to be told it looks like it works but it really doesn’t and you have to pay. That is terrible.

@jsnowbusiness the primary category feature is used in the breadcrumbs (if you’re using Yoast SEO breadcrumbs instead of WooCommerce’s). It still makes sense to use it, depending on the permalink structure for products.

In regards to changing the permalink feature being removed, I do believe you are right, also this was a few years ago, not recently.

If you believe this feature should be part of Yoast SEO (free version), please submit a feature request on GitHub.
