    One option I’ve also seen is to superimpose a cropped version of same image semi transparent to fill the ‘white space’ created

    Isn’t the question you’re asking in this thread about the same?

    Filling the whitespace with a semi-transparent duplicate of the original image is a nice idea, but I think cropping the image is a more neat way to go. These two are pretty familiar and cropping is easier and more lightweight to code, than using duplicates of the same image.

    No this one is not cropping but just stretching in proportion and fitting only height, which I thought would be easier since it is similar to current stretch

    Just fitting the height is already possible at the moment. If you disable stretching and have an image that has a taller dimension than the slide it’s in, it will be fit to the height of the slide.

    This will indeed create the two whitespaces on either sides of the image, which won’t be filled up with a duplicate of that same image.
