finding api for akismet plugin in 2.0 (non wordpress.com users!)

  • i just installed 2.0 and tried to activate the akismet plugin. the plugin tells me i need to verify my api key, but i cann’t find the api key to plug in.

    the faq, other forum posts, etc. all tell me that i need to log in (or register) to wordpress.com. but i don’t need to register with wordpress.com; i use word press on my own domain. the only username and password i have is my administrator’s username and password.

    so, my question is:
    how do non-wordpress.com users find their api? do i have to register with wordpress.com (and start up an unecessary blog) in order to get an api? wouldn’t that apply to my wordpress.com blog rather than my blog on my domain?

    i went ahead and applied for a wordpress.com account and used the api for that, which is what the FAQs and forums point you toward.

    while it works, this method seems like a waste of space (and really, just a way for wordpress.com to boost its numbers) by having domain owners put up a dummy space on wordpress.com. you’d think they’d have a more direct way for domain users to activate a spam plugin…

    You could always use it as a very private blog – esp if your name is not in the title.
    You could really let rip at anyone you wanted as bad as you wanted and they would never know it was you…

    It’s better to get these emotions out ??

    i signed up for a wordpress.com blog. once i got my API i went to my wordpress.com blog and deleted the account.

    so far, tha API still works on my non wordpress.com site. however it got me thinking, if the API doesnt need to be validated against a legit blog doesnt this leave room for exploitation and/or transfering of API’s?

    but i could be wrong me and my friends have been too busy
    bathing off of St. Barts with spider monkeys for the past two weeks. Tripping on acid changed our whole perspective on stuff.

    I also like Pod’s idea of the VERY private blog.

    If you deleted your blog then the key will work until the cache expires, then it’ll stop.

    So, you can only get the API with wordpress.com account? Can an API number be used on different blog/domains?
