Finding and adding login fields to the sidebar

    Hi,

    I’m relatively new to WordPress and coding pages. The theme I am currently using places the login/register link at the very bottom of the page, and I think people are not seeing it. I was hoping to cut and paste the code from the theme (for the login part) into the sidebar so it is more visible, but when I tried that using a text widget, the login part didn’t show up (but the RSS links did). I cut the code from the Footer file which I thought had everything I needed but aparently not. I’m a novice at reading page code, so I’m not sure where else to look, or how to create my own code snippet for the login.

    If anyone could give me some pointers, or a hand with the code, I’d really appreciate it.

  • If you use widgets – editing the sidebar is useless: the widgest over-write everything.
    You can move the Meta widgets up.

    On the other hand, sorry to say this: give me a reason why a visitor should register to your site? To comment? That’s not worth it, and you will lose many comments because people hate to register just to post a short comment on your site.

    Well, I didn’t actually choose to make logins a requirement for posting, that is what I got in the “out of the box” install of WordPress. Most blogs I have seen require some kind of login or verification to post, so I thought it was standard. Doesn’t someone have to register to be notified of a posting update?

    What are the alternatives?

    Ok, so I’m taking your point and I found the option to turn off registering as a requirement to post.

    Outside of that, I would still like to move the login link to a more visible location on the page for anyone who would register, and need help figuring out how to do that.

    Oh, I see what you mean about the Meta widget. I wish you had elaborated on that more, I didn’t understand at first. Ok, that seems to be a quick and dirty way to get what I want.

    Is there any way to edit what shows up in the Meta widget?
