This question concerns just the final steps of cutting over to a new WordPress installation.

Let’s say I have a clunky-but-functioning WordPress site at https://www.mydomain.com/mysite and that I have https://www.mysite.com correctly bringing up that installation. All its files are in /public_html/mysite.

Now I build a new WordPress site with a great new theme at https://www.mydomain.com/test and I get it all ready to go. Can I now accomplish the final cutover by simply:

    • On the new site, going in to the Dashboard | Settings | General and making the WordPress URL and Site URL both https://www.mysite.com
    • Renaming the folder \public_html\mysite to be \public_html\mysite-old, and then
    • Renaming the folder \public_html\test to be public_html\mysite

Or have I forgotten one or two or ten important things? (Wanted to figure this out in advance of actually creating mydomain.com/test.)

Now, to answer my own question: Yes, that procedure worked, and I have two hints for others who have the same question:

    1. This all works better if you have the two sites (clunky production site and clean new test site) at parallel levels in your folder structure — such as https://mydomain.com/home and https://mydomain.com/test . Makes the renaming easier.

    and

    2. If you’re like me, then after you go live with the new site you will have to hand-code a few links, mostly in text widgets, because they still refer to material in the test site.
