Filtrable tiled portfolio

Hello everyone.
I’m trying to recreate my portfolio and I’m encountering huge problems with the layout as no templates fully meet my needs.
At the moment this is my website: https://www.madquake.net.
What I don’t like of this template is the layout of the thumbnails, too squared and with too much text. I’d like something tiled, like Daisho. Unfortunately Daisho doesn’t seem to meet my needs as I definitely need to insert into the same portfolio page multiple images and multiple videos. I also need to have the website to move on a different page and not showing my projects into a popup window. For this reason I thought I could just modify my actual portfolio adding a plugin that could help me to achieve this.
Now, several plugin do exist online to create filtrable pages [so I can select: videos, graphic design, illustration works], but I don’t understand if using those plugin I can create also pages of tiled thumbnails and images that once clicked take me to a different window.

I found Awesome Filtrable Portfolio but it doesn’t seem allowing people to tile the images and additionally once you click on a thumbnail the resulting image is shown on a popup window.

Do you know if those plugins can be used in combination?
Do you have a link to a good tutorial? Or maybe can someone help me to better understand how to use them?
