Please edit the page where you inserted the Connections Directory Block.

Open the “Order” panel and change the “Order By” option from “Default” to “First Name”.

I did that but when I click on the letter to filter it uses the last names instead of the names.

Sorry, it is not possible to use the Character index with sort orders other than the default first name.
