Filling in the blanks in Admin, Settings, General?

You should already be set as an administrator. If you set your status (role) at anything less than that, then you will get locked out of your sites admin panel.

The default role for new users who might register (if you will allow registrations) should be set at ‘subscriber’. Subscribers don’t have publishing authorization.

For yourself, if you want to establish a second user profile to use for publishing your blog posts, you could select a role below ‘Admin’, but when you are logged in with a user id less than admin, then you won’t have access to other areas of the admin dashboard.

Not sure if that answers your question or not. I wasn’t sure exactly what you were asking.

Many thanks for your comment. You have totally answered my question and I understand. I discovered it was set at subscriber and that is definitely not what I want.

So much to learn, and this is a HUGE challenge after Google Blogger let me tell you!

New user default role has nothing to do with you

It’s what anyonwe who signs up for your blog is set at (if you allow people to sign up)

so generally you want that set to ‘Subscriber’ so that people can’t sign up and start posting to your site

If you want people to be able to contribute, make that set to contributor

You definitely don’t want that set to admin, or anyone can sign up to your blog as an admin, and ruin your site

I am the only person who will be writing anything on my blog, except for comments from any readers … which have to be okayed by me before publication. Have I got that right?

Since you will be the only person writing posts then you will want the default setting to be ‘subscriber’ for any new person who may register, if you are even going to allow registrations. Setting the role or status level doesn’t have anything to do with comments. Comments are controlled under different settings.

Subscriber is the lowest role and only allows people to subscribe to your blog, and they will not be able to write blog posts. In that you do not want anyone else to be authorized to write blog posts, then you should leave the default role at ‘Subscriber’ for everyone else (who might register).

Your role needs to be Administrator, or you’ll lock yourself out of your dashboard.

To clarify, make sure YOUR role is set to Administrator, but for new registrations you should leave the default setting at Subscriber.

If in the future you wish to allow someone else to contribute then you can change each individual as per what you want them to be authorized to do.

If there won’t be any new users then it doesn’t make any difference which role you set as the default. Subscriber is fine.

Since you are the original Admin – don’t even mess with “New User” – only add a new user if someone else will be Posting in your blog.

Look at “Your Profile” if you are logged in as the original Admin. you should not have the ability to adjust your permissions (Roll) – they are set and stay at Admin.

If for some reason you wanted to log in not as an Admin THEN set up a new account for yourself – (I did one for myself just so I could see exactly the different access levels would look like for a second test blog I was setting up.)

You are the only person making posts so you should only have one person in the Users section – You and Yourself.
