• Like the post-er at the top of the Installing WP list, I have made multiple installations of WP and hit snags. I know now that part of the problem is that there were numerous downloads within my site, and I would confuse them. I’m excellent with coding logic and pick up on that quickly and learn it fast. I wish I could say the same where file managment is concerned. One wise move I made was to clear wordpress out completely and go at it again later. I’ll be doing that soon, perhaps tomorrow.

I’ve stumbled over the initial steps with all of these installations, and AM bothering to read the codex first. A point of confusion I have over this.

If I use the c-panel, is the use of the filezilla download unnecessary? I do have an address, a domain name, and a user name through FileZilla, and I’m telling myself only ONE downlod of WP this time. IfI go through the c-panel page can I disregard the filezilla without consequences? Thanks to any and all who can answer this question.

  • Going through cPanel will give you an automated one-click install, if I’m right? If that’s the case, no yu do not need to do anything with FileZilla. FileZilla is only an FTP/SFTP program that lets you put the right files in the right place, and when you use the one-click installers, they are already doing that for you.

Personally, I don’t use the once-click or automated installers. I’ve found them to be a little “quirky” in the past at times, and some of them don’t let you get updates when they are released. If you can, I would recommend doing a manual installation, as I’ve found that normally works out better in the long run. Save FileZilla for taking backups of the sites files. ??

They’re both file managers, you definitely don’t have to use both.

cPanel’s file manager is provided by your hosting provider, but most hosting provider’s offer FTP or SFTP access too (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on setting up access). These are file transfer protocols designed to be used with third-party apps, like https://filezilla-project.org/ and https://cyberduck.io/

You’ll only ever need to use one file manager, but with so many FTP/SFTP apps available out there, you’ll probably find one that’s more comfortable to use than cPanel’s file manager (which I find clunky and annoying). ??

There seems to be two questions here – manual WP install vs. auto-install; and cpanel file manager vs. SFTP. 1) Experts seem to favor manual WP install. Dunderheads like me are thankful for the Softaculous auto-install. 2) Experts and dunderheads alike seem to favor FileZilla or other SFTP. I prefer the admittedly clunky and annoying cpanel file manager. I administer my site from several PCs and don’t bother installing FileZilla on all of them.
