Files with name core.[number] are being created

  • In the last few days, some files named core.34987, core.28745, etc are being created in my public_html folder. It has been happening 10-15 times a day, always at times like 7.01 am, 8.02 am, 9.31 am etc. Each has around 17Mb in size, so they are quickly taking up a lot of space, specially since we back up the entire site 3 times a day and send it to remote storage.

    The reason that I am bringing this to the WordFence support forum is that looking at the cron events, the only one that matches the time pattern is wordfence::hourlyCron(). I also opened a support ticket at my host (SiteGround) and they said that it is not something on their end.

    So is it possible that these files are being generated by that cron event? If so, how do we stop them from being created? Or remove them once they are no longer necessary?

    Running WP 4.9.8 on a Linux server. Happy to provide any more information necessary.
