    Hi,

While I was checking image storage in Forminator I came across the location of storage as – “For security reasons, we store all the file uploads of your forms with random names under the designated subdirectories of the “/wp-content/uploads/forminator/” directory. You can also specify a custom storage directory under the custom tab.”

But I can find many images stored in /wp-content/uploads/2023/03 folder also.

Basically I want to delete all the old images of the form submission. I have deleted the form submissions manually, but now I am having trouble finding and deleting the images.

Please explain how can it be done?

    Hi @plgupa

    I hope you’re well today!

The “/wp-content/uploads/2023/23” is not Forminator folder but WordPress Media Library folder and it can store many other images – basically all the images that you have uploaded to the site via post editor or directly via “Media” page in March 2023.

The files stored in Media Library folders (such as e.g. /wp-content/uploads/2023/03) by Forminator are additional files: if form’s upload field is set to add uploads to Media Library it simply triggers internal/standard WordPress core functions to add images there and Forminator doesn’t save/keep any additional information about that.

If you edit any given form, then it its “Settings” section there is the “Submission Files” option at the bottom which you can set to “Delete”. If it’s set to delete (before actually deleting submission!) then whenever you remove submission it will also delete all the files uploaded by that form but except files added to Media Library.

Those files must be deleted separately and manually via the “Media -> Library” page and this is because if image is already added to Media Library, Forminator have no way to know if and how such image is used on the site and what could possibly have been done to it since submission. Automatically deleting this images could result in missing images on site but would also require storing information about them in Forminator submission.

While submissions are there in Forminator, it is possible to check uploaded images file names and based on that manually remove them from Media Library but if you have already deleted submissions, I’m afraid there’s no way to find out which of them are from forms, I’m afraid.

There are some 3rd-party plugins that can help clean up Media LIbrary but most of them work under assumption that images are “attached to content” (see the “Uploaded to” column on “Media” page when set to “List view”) which is not always true – so there is a risk to remove images that shouldn’t be really removed using such plugins.

I’m afraid the only reliably safe way here is to review the Media Library manually and manually remove images that you know that may have been uploaded via the form or that you are sure are just not used anywhere across the site.

    Kind regards,
    Adam
