I have tried to upload an image file into a page and got the message Unable to create directory /home/…/public_html/wpfiles/wp-content/uploads/2012/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

I’ve just read a post which suggested I change the file permission of my wp-contents directory recursively to 766 which I have done but I still get the same message.

I tried to upgrade to 3.3.1 and this failed too which I’m guessing was down to file permissions.

    What am I missing please?

Okay, well I found that 766 stopped my website pages from displaying. I found that changing the permissions for the uploads directory to 777 allowed it to create the required subdirectories and upload the photo. I hope that when I change it back to 755 it will still work…
