File permission and upload problem

I have no idea what happened but all of the sudden I cannot write to my wp-content directory… at all. I can’t upload media within WordPress or activate plugins that require creating a directory. I can however upload via FTP which is not an adequate workaround. I’ve changed my file permissions to 777 on all levels both via ssh and FTP just to test it out and no luck.
