File name not retained after upload and title changes

    Has anyone come across this and know how to fix it?

    I have uploaded 2 jpg files for use in product pages, the filenames state what they are, the first is named Birthday (Orange Yellow).jpg and the second is named Birthday (Blue Yellow).jpg However when I upload them both, the filename changes to “dav.jpg” and “dav-1.jpg” and the title/caption of both changes to “dav” also. Sometimes is randomly calls them “mde.jpg” and changes the title and caption to “mde”.

    I’ve tried disabling all my plugins and uploading an image to ensure it wasn’t one of the plugins causing it but it did the exact same thing.

    I have tried to find a plugin that could stop it from happening or an article online but no one seems to have this issue.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    It could be your theme or a semi-hidden must-use plugin. Not only deactivate all plugins, rename the mu-plugins folder in wp-content if you have one. Also switch themes to one of the twenty* default themes. Then try uploading.

    I’ve seen file names modified if it contains illegal chars under Linux, or if the name already exists, but some semblance of the original is maintained. Renaming to something entirely different is very unexpected.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.

    I renamed the following dir:
    plugins to plugin1
    mu-plugins to mu-plugins1

    I switched theme to Twenty Twenty-One

    I then tried to upload a single image to the medial library and while it did retain the filename in the folder, it changed the Title and the Caption to “oznorHB”

    I also backed up my site and db, removed everything everything and started with a fresh install of WordPress with no active plugins.

    I uploaded a single image and the exact same thing happened, the filename was retained but it changed the Title and the Caption to “oznorHB”

    If I can’t find a resolution for this I might need to just go through all my images after uploading them to update all the Titles and Captions. Very time consuming and annoying.
