I ran a scan today and it there was a file change in the core files of WordPress that they flagged as high.

the file is: WordPress core: wp-admin/session_mm_cgi-fcgi4314.sem.

I tried to fix by deleting the file as Wordfence suggested but it does give warning.
I don’t want to leave the file there, that is prime for hackers.

Any help will be appreciated on this issue.

    Thank you in advance

  • Hey @teresacuervo,

These files are created by PHP CGI / FCGI, and are safe to delete, what warning did you run into? Can you open up one of them and see what it contains?

It may be that one of the cron jobs failed (caused by Wordfence), or another plugin that is crashing and PHP is creating those .sem files

If you look at a Wordfence Diagnostics report do you see any overdue cron jobs? You can find this in Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics > Cron Jobs.

    Please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Hey,@wfgerald

Thank you for the quick response. I tried doing that but the popup from Wordfence told me to be careful because there were in the WordPress core file. I actually with the help of my host, had to do a clean install of WordPress, because there was an entry and it had installed Hello Dolly Plugin and 3 themes to my website. I deleted those and ran three scans. All seems to be OK.

    Got it just in time

    Hey @teresacuervo,

Thanks for the update, and happy to hear it!

I’m sorry to hear that you had to go through that, but I’m glad you were able to track it down.

Please do let us know if anything else comes up.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

    Hey, @wfgerald

Indeed, glad to have caught it on time. I just need to ask you. Is there a way through the Wordfence plugin, to harden the themes and plugins folder? That is how this happened.

    Many thanks

    Teresa
