fields randomly stop showing on the front end

We’ve experienced several times where a custom field using advanced custom fields suddenly stop showing on the front end of the website. Re-publishing or updating the page fixes the problem, any ideas what could be causing this problem? We maintain a dozen sites which have had this problem… tough to track down due to randomness.
