field is required, but I’m not using “*”

I’ve been using this form for a few years for class registration. Now, however, fields that are not designated as required (“*”) are required.

There are both radio buttons and checkboxes that are doing this. There are 2 courses; the user can sign up for one or the other or both. Now the form is forcing both.
